The native Australian wildflower was named after Sir Joseph Banks a naturalist aboard the Endeavour with Captain Cook in 1770. She was immediately aware of the significance of her find this was one of four banksias discovered by Sir Joseph Banks in 1770 in. The banksia Serrata is best known for its saw-like serrated leaves and eye-catching green-yellow flowers.

Her banksia career started modestly in 1961 when she was 30 expecting her fourth child.
